Braille Presses
The Institute has put in place an impressive infrastructure for printing Braille textbooks and magazines for persons with visual impairment. It comprises the Central Braille Press established in 1951, the Regional Braille Press established in 2008 at Chennai and 25 other Braille Presses established by the Government of India under the Project on ‘Financial Support for Development of Accessible Learning Materials under SIPDA Scheme.
Objective:
- To undertake production, promotion, and distribution of reading material in accessible formats.
- To establish liaison and support with different stakeholders.
With the combined efforts of these Braille Presses, the Braille literature published in the following languages:
Assamese, Garo, Bangla, English, Kannada, Hindi, Khasi, Punjabi, Lusai, Nagamese, Tamil, Sanskrit,
Telugu and Urdu.
These Presses (Central Braille Press & Regional Braille Press) altogether produced 83,920 Braille Volumes. In
2023-24, the value of production was Rs 176.77 lakhs and the value of sales were registered Rs 167.24 lakhs.
Large Print Press
The Institute established the country’s first Large Print Press on 31 March, 2012 to provide large print
books and literature to low vision persons. During the year, the Press provided school text books in large
print fonts to low vision children from the States of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Union Territory of Chandigarh
and Delhi. In 2023-24, the Large Print Press produced 35,771 Large Print Volumes and printed
59,38,679 pages whereas value of production was Rs 44.77 lakhs and the value of sales were Rs 95.70
lakhs.
PROJECT ON FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ACCESSIBLE LEARNING
MATERIALS UNDER SIPDA SCHEME
Since 2014, the Institute is also implementing the Braille Press Project under the SIPDA Scheme of
DEPwD as a Nodal Agency. Under the project, 25 Braille Presses have been
established/modernised/augmented in every State of the country for timely availability of the Braille text
books to the school going children. Initially, the project focused on providing Braille textbooks to school-
going students only, but after review (in November, 2023) it has been expanded for the students with VI
pursuing higher education programs at Colleges University level. In addition to the Braille text books,
Talking Books, E-Pubs/Digital Books and Large Print Books, have also been included. It emphasizes also
enhancing educational accessibility for PwVI at various educational levels.
