1. What is NIEPVD?
NIEPVD stands for the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual
Disabilities(NIEPVD). It is an autonomous body under the Department of Empowerment of
Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,
Government of India, New Delhi.
2. What is the main objective of NIEPVD?
The main objective of NIEPVD is to empower persons with visual disabilities by providing them
with rehabilitation, research, education and training opportunities.
3. Who can avail of NIEPVD’s services?
NIEPVD’s services are primarily aimed at persons with visual disabilities, including those who
are blind or have low vision as well as their families and caregivers.
4. What are the Services being provided by the Institute?
NIEPVD offers a range of services to persons with visual impairment including:
- Long-Term HRD courses to develop Special Educators for persons with visual
impairment, Deaf- blindness, Multiple Disabilities and Clinical and
Rehabilitation Psychologist. - Short-Term & CRE programmes for capacity building and professional
development - School Education (Nursery to Class XII for children with visual impairment)
- Research and Development
- Identification of jobs & job placement
- Production, Distribution & Supply of Braille Aids & Appliances
- Early Detection and Intervention through Early Intervention Centre
- Clinical, Referral & Guidance & Counseling
- Production, Distribution and supply of accessible reading material in Braille,

5. Where is NIEPVD HQs and their RCs and CRCs located for providing services to PwVI ?
NIEPVD HQs is located at Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The Institute has one Regional
Centre at Chennai (T.N.) and 03 Composite Regional Centres for Persons with
Disabilities(CRC) at Sundernagar(Himachal Pradesh), Gorakhpur(U.P) and
Jaipur(Rajasthan).

8. How can school going children with visual impairment get benefit from NIEPVD?
The Institute’s Model School for the Visually Handicapped at Dehradun affiliated to CBSE, is imparting education to children with visual impairment from pre-school to Class 12th. Apart from providing free education, boarding & lodging, uniforms, books and equipment, the school also offers a modicum of plus curriculum activities for all-round development of its students. As per their individual preferences and aptitudes, students learn vocal and instrumental music, martial arts, yoga, skating, cooking, computer applications and craft work.
